Anatomy of a table saw blade from saw blades manufacturers

Close up of flat top grinding saw blade teeth
Before you can run, you have to walk - but never run with a saw blade.

Here are some basic terms to better understand blades.

tooth
Sharp point for cutting.

Carbide tips of high-quality inserts are brazed to the teeth. The more carbide the better, as the blade can be sharpened several times and over a period of years.

Poor quality blades either have steel teeth or have too little carbide to really sharpen.

The more serrations, the cleaner and slower the cut. The fewer teeth it has, the faster it will cut.

You will often see the number of teeth written as "T" followed by a number, so an 80-tooth blade is a T80.

esophagus
Dig out the gap between the teeth.

The esophagus helps keep the blade from heating up during cutting in two ways:

They remove sawdust from the cut
they bring air into the cut
The fewer teeth a saw blade has, the larger the gullet required. When there are fewer teeth, more material needs to be cut per tooth - and more sawdust needs to be done.
