Luggage fabric's fabric selection is an important part of any sewing project, and bags are no exception. Generally speaking, fabrics fall into two broad categories: apparel weight fabrics and upholstery fabrics. As the name suggests, we use clothing weights and home decor weights. However, to make bags, we can use both types. Heavyweight fabrics are generally better for the lining of bags, while soft fabrics are best for the outside, but there are exceptions to this rule. Lisa Lam's book A Bag for All Reasons provides great tips on choosing the perfect fabric for any type of bag. We have listed some below:

Cotton/Quilt Fabric - This fabric is used for the lining and exterior of bags. Cotton comes in many different weights, but to make bags, try to use a medium weight cotton. Quilted fabrics are usually made of cotton and come with a range of colorful, beautiful and fun prints. You can use cotton for almost any type of bag.

Laminated Cloth/Oilcloth - Often used for the exterior of bags, this vinyl coated fabric has a beautiful print and has a tough water repellent finish, making it ideal for swim bags, travel bags and toiletry bags. Working and stitching with laminated fabrics is slightly different than working with woven fabrics.

Canvas/Denim - Usually used for the outside of the bag, canvas comes in different weights. Choose the heaviest weight your sewing machine can handle. The canvas is strong and has a sturdy look. When sewing with canvas and denim, always use a jeans needle. I think canvas looks best on larger bags like shopping bags, messenger bags, travel bags and beach bags.
